Adders have Portsmouth FC dreams
ATHERSTONE Town under-18s manager Mark Grainger says his side can stun Huddersfield Town in the FA Youth Cup next Wednesday night – but must stay focused on the task in hand.
Heads may have been turned by the fact that the Adders, if successful at the 24,500 capacity Galpharm Stadium (kick off 7.30pm), will travel to Portsmouth in round three.
But Grainger says that potentially mouthwatering clash must be put to the back of his players' minds.
"This is a massive game for this football club and it's also a match that seems to have grabbed the imagination of a lot of people in town, " said Grainger, of the game, which was originally due to be played tonight but was cancelled due to a waterlogged pitch.
"We are well aware of the fact that we would face Portsmouth in the next round should we progress but that's something we have to put to the back of our minds.
"Huddersfield are all that matters at the moment and that's a massive test for us and we are big underdogs for the game.
"That said it's a great tie for us against a big club and we are not going to Huddersfield to make up the numbers.
"I have had some advice from people who have seen them play and know what we have to do.
"Their youth side is very good and, in fact, plays in the top academy league with the likes of Manchester United plus they train 24/7. So it will be tough for us but we've got nothing to lose.
"We'll prepare the right way. We will have a proper pre-match meal and train properly and see how we get on.
"We have a good set of lads here. Five or six of them have played in the Southern Midlands League Division One this season and have done themselves proud.
"So they shouldn't fear going to Huddersfield.
"They should go there and enjoy the occasion and hopefully we will get the right result.
"As I say we have a lot of talented lads. We have only lost once this season and that was down to a little over-confidence.
"We are a tight knit group and these lads would run through brick walls for each other. With the spirit we have, we can do well."
The under-18s have beaten Sutton Coldfield Town, Boldmere St Michaels, Ellesmere Rangers, Dosthill Colts and Highgate United so far in reaching round two.
First team boss Daren Fulford (right) has strengthened his squad with the signing of Robbie Banks from Romulus.
The 22-year-old, who can play in a central striking role or on the wing, is a player highly regarded by Fulford.
He was with Crewe as a junior and has played for Gresley and Shepshed before joining Romulus.
"I heard on the grapevine that he wasn't particularly happy at Roms," said Fulford.
"When we contacted them, they agreed to waive the seven days notice of approach so the transfer paperwork will go through in time for Robbie to be included in the squad for Saturday's trip to Biggleswade."
Banks is locally-based in the Kingsbury area and, tongue in cheek, Fulford added: "At 22, he's a bit old for us," a reference to the youthful nature of his squad.
With Grant Roscorla, Brendan Murphy and assistant player-manager Dave Haywood back in contention having been unavailable for Tuesday night's 3-2 win at Barton Rovers, Fulford will have plenty of options as he targets three wins in a row against mid-table Biggleswade.
The Bedfordshire side earned a 1-1 draw when they came to Sheepy Road in September.
