A TAMWORTH student has proven he has the same quality as the luxury cars he helps to build by becoming 'apprentice of the year'

Tim Egerton, 19, who works at the BMW engine manufacturing plant at Hams Hall, is also on an advanced modern engineering apprentice programme at Birmingham Metropolitan College, and was named apprentice of the year by his lecturers.

"I was thrilled to have had my work recognised in this way," commented Tim. "My time at the College so far has been really enjoyable and it's thanks to my employer and Birmingham Met that I believe I can reach my potential.

He was presented with his award by TV weather girl, Emma Jesson in recognition of his academic achievements in manufacturing engineering, where he has gained skills in engineering design, measurement and inspection. Tim has also been a proactive member of his campus's learner voice committee where he has provided extensive feedback in relation to refurbishments made to the college's engineering workshops, study facilities and onsite amenities.

"I decided to study an apprenticeship because I was keen to be out in the workplace rather than in the classroom all the time," he added. "As an apprentice I'm gaining skills in all areas of the Hams Hall plant and continue to improve my knowledge of how systems work.

"I'm hoping to become a quality engineer after I've completed my Apprenticeship, so I'm very grateful for all the experience I've gained so far."

Birmingham Metropolitan College's principal and chief executive, Dr Christine Braddock, said she hoped Tim would motivate other learners. "Not only has Tim been an exceptional student, he has been incredibly adept at sharing his knowledge of working in industry and studying with other apprentices so that the College's learning provision can continue to move forward," she said.

"He is an excellent role model that many of our learners can be inspired by. We congratulate Tim on his success to date and wish him well in his future progress."
