TAMWORTH AC's Tom Burton maintained his fine start to the season with another personal best – and a bronze medal from the European Trials at Bedford International Stadium last weekend.

Twenty-year-old Burton set out his stall out when he took second – to Lloyd Gumbs – in his heat of the 400m hurdles at the AVIVA under-23 Championships, finishing in 52.92secs.

And his winter training programme paid off in the final as he claimed third in personal best of 51.10secs – beaten only by Shaftesbury Barnet's Gumbs and Toby Ulm from Swindon Harriers.

Burton, now has a week to prepare for the prestigious World Trials at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham.

Alex Berrow experienced tough competition in moving up to the under-23 age group.

Affected by the intense heat, Berrow who still has two more years in the age group, threw a distance of 46.23m in the hammer competition to finish in tenth place.

Meanwhile, Tamworth sprint star Meghan Beesley has made the GB squad for the European under-23 Championship after coming home third in the 400m hurdles at the trials.

Beesley, who claimed World Junior bronze last year, improved her time from the heats by three seconds in the final – finishing in 57.68secs.

But the 19-year-old finished behind by Perri Shakes Drayton and Eilidh Child.

Beesley also finished second at the Arcobaleno Athletceuropa meeting in Celle Ligure, Italy last week.

The Birchfield Harrier finished in 57.91secs on that occasion.
