TAMWORTH Cricket Club are looking to discover the next generation of stars by launching a weekend academy for youngsters.

The Birmingham League club have been active in the community for a number of years, going into primary schools as part of the Chance to Shine programme.

They are now set to start a winter coaching programme where they hope to attract more youngsters into the sport.

Coaching sessions are being held for youngsters in school year seven and above at Rawlett Sports Centre on Sunday mornings between 11.30am and 1pm.

The first session is free of charge.

Tamworth Cricket Club chairman Mick Nield said: "We have done a lot of work in primary schools, coaching at eight in total.

"That's around 250 kids that we have worked with and the feedback from youngsters and teachers has been really positive.

"The reaction of a lot of the kids is that they would like to play more cricket but the key it making that transition from school to club.

"We need parents to bring their youngsters down to the sessions to try out the sport.

"The first session is free of charge and its a good introduction to cricket."

He added: "We also want to see more girls taking up the sport.

"We are starting a push on women's cricket and are working with Landau Forte, QEMS and Rawlett Schools and hopefully we can attract more girls to try the sport out this year."
