DIY giant to open at retail park as part of £6m expansion plan
A £6 MILLION development scheme will see B&Q head to Ventura Park.
The DIY giant will take on new premises, which are being built as part of the Cardinal Point scheme on land at the back of Sainsbury's.
B&Q will occupy the largest of four units to be constructed in Ventura Park Road.
Building work on the multi-million pound development will begin on Monday. It is expected to be completed later this year.
This week it was announced that the contact has been award Hessle-based PDR Construction.
"This is another significant contract win for us and our first project for B&Q, part of one of the UK's largest retail groups," explained PDR director John White.
"The project will help to raise our profile further outside this region and in an industry sector which seems to be weathering the recession better than most."
The development includes a 45,000 square foot unit, which will be home to B&Q, and three smaller retail units at 35,000 square feet combined.
As well as the national DIY store B&Q, fashion giant Next and leading electronics store Maplins plan to take premises at the scheme, which will eventually boast almost 100,000 square foot of retail space just 10 minutes walk from the town centre.
Another four units are also in the pipeline for the site, totalling 22,000 square foot.
PDR Construction was awarded the contract by property developer The Redbourne Group, on behalf of The Royal London Mutual Insurance Society Ltd.
The architect is Wakefield-based The Harris Partnership, structural engineer is Capita Symonds, and Employers Agent is Leeds-based Gardiner and Theobald LLP.
Other PDR contract wins include £2.5 million of work for discount retailer Aldi in Rotherham and Pocklington, and a £1 million project to build an enterprise centre for Leeds City Council.
