Flouride claims will finally be reviewed after protests
AFTER a long, hard-fought battle, claims that too much fluoride in Tamworth’s water supply is harmful to residents will finally be reviewed by councillors.
Protesters packed out the public gallery at Marmion House on Tuesday night offering a united front against councillors they felt had previously ignored the issue.
But a petition, signed by more than 1,000 people, forced members to reconsider their position, with councillors voting unanimously in favour of referring the town’s fluoride levels for scrutiny.
“It was a well deserved victory,” said Councillor Chris Cooke, who has lobbied the authority on the issue for the last 12 month.
“Very much a show of what people power can do.
“Hundreds of people signed the petition forcing fluoride onto Tamworth council’s agenda. Many other people emailed, phoned and otherwise lobbied their local councillors.
“When they saw the public gallery packed with people, councillors realised they had been brow-beaten by this wave of public support. They had to give in.
“It’s been hard work,” he added. “But it proves people power works.”
Tuesday night’s meeting saw councillors across the chamber back Chris Cooke’s motion for the matter to be added to the community and wellbeing scrutiny committee’s agenda.
Cllr Lee Bates said: “It should go back for scrutiny because that’s what the people want.”
Cllr Simon Peaple agreed: “It deserves to be looked at. My view is that where we’ve got petitions like this we should refer them to the relevant committee.”
Opposition Leader Cllr John Faulkner said: “The question is not whether or not we’re in favour of fluoride being added to our water, it’s whether or not it should be debated at the community wellbeing and scrutiny committee.”
Despite offering his support, council Leader Danny Cook said “there are bigger issues in Tamworth”. While Cllr Andrew James disputed many of the claims made by Cllr Cook about the dangers of fluoridation.
The matter will now be added onto the wellbeing and scrutiny committee’s agenda.

“First of all I would like to thank, Chris Cooke, as an individual councillor, for all the hard work, the set backs, and the definate opposition of most councillors, in his fight to simply get it to this stage. Even so, I do think that all of his efforts may have been thwarted, had not many of his enemies on council, baulked at the prospect of openly opposing his motion. Of course, one out of the spotlight of very local scrutiny, they may well fall back on the time honoured party ideology of ignoring the people and following the flag. Personally, I would not trust the majority of them as far as I could kick a pregnant elephant ( N.B. to animal rights, RSPA, and those prone to political correctness................kicking a pregnant elephant, was not serious).
Danny Cook ( can't bring myself to give him his title of council leader), says that there are * bigger issues* in tamworth? Name them and debate them, with the public, if you dare.
John Faulkner. It is not whether or not is should have been debated, it should have been full stop, and the commitee should have been made up of those ( if one could find any) with no axe to grind.
Like Warfarin, flouride is a poison, and should not be pushed down peoples throats, as is becoming the custom of politicians across the country, indeed the world. Instead a proper survey should have been carried out long before implementation.
Chris Cooke is a rare individual in council, where nodding donkeys prevail. Across the whole spectrum, we have people pretending to represent we, the people, and although the veneer is so thin as to represent cat ice, the individuals that get treated like garbage still go out and vote tory or labour.....................because................
Councillor Cooke, I and many other salute you, but because we like to think things through, we are becoming a minority in the land. Wake up Tamworth, wake up England, the main three parties are laughing their socks off at you.”

“Agreed, OscarOneThree. The battle is yet to be won. There is no guarantee that this council scrutiny will be a serious one. Indeed all the signs (throwing me off that health committee and packing it with people known to be against fluoridation) are that the issue will not be taken seriously. However - at least fluoridation is on the Council agenda.
Cllr Danny Cook's "there are bigger issues in Tamworth" comment illustrates the problem. Before a scrutiny is even done he thinks he knows how important this issue is. It may not be the biggest issue in Tamworth - or on the planet - but it is the easiest one to deal with. It just needs someone to turn off the fluoride taps.
Dentists and doctors are busy people who don't have time to study the fluoride science. They know what they have been told from above and that is what they accept. They compartmentalise diseases. To them hypothyroidism is one illness to be treated one way - and arthritis, tooth decay and fluorosis, brittle bones or fibromyalgia are different illnesses to be treated different ways. That they may all appear to be aggravated by a single cause is not on their radar. It seems to me in any case that the problem is a political one. One of not losing face and the money involved.
Cllr Andrew James' unfortunate tendancy to foam at the mouth when sensing an opportunity to attack me personally will preclude him from ever having an open mind on this issue. His inclusion on the Health Committee does not bode well. But other councillors may still be open to the evidence that exists. In any case, it may not go to the Health Committee. The motion that was passed said "...or other appropriate scrutiny committee..." which could yet be a special committee made up for the purpose, if the Health Committee's agenda really is as full as is claimed. They might even include me on such a special committee? I live in hope. :-)”

“It appears once again that some of our Councillor's are content to ignore their electorate on a very important matter, namely our health. From what I have seen and read in the Herald, and elsewhere, it appears that most of them are treating this matter very lightly. There is a half expectation in me that the matter of water fluoridation will be 'swept under the carpet' when they are behind closed door's, and away from the public gaze.
I hope they will prove me wrong!
Sometimes I wonder why people stand for election, when afterwards it appears they have no concerns for the people who elected them, only for upholding a 'party' line. This could be said of national and local politics. It's about time party politics was dismissed in favour of individuals elected for their common sense, and duty, to the people of this country.
From the Leader of the Council we have the comment, " There are bigger issues in Tamworth". Well maybe there are, but that is no reason to dismiss this issue. We should remind them that as Councillor's, they cost us a great deal of money, and they should be concerned, and pull their weight on any issue that concerns the people of Tamworth. They are not members of a private club, they are paid for the job of serving the people of Tamworth, and they have a duty to look into any evidence that points to the fact that we may have a big problem here which could be effecting the health of some people.
Oscar One Three, Tamworth.”

“It's good to know that after all these years Cllr Cooke has finally managed to get the issue raised.
As i and a few residents turned up to the meeting we believe that after all this hassle of trying to get the petition in that the process went through too smoothly. I would keep an eye out in case they try to use the health scrutiny meeting to decide not to do anything. However Im sure if this happens Cllr Cooke will once again fight for it. It's a shame that some of the other Cllr's do not agree about the issue.
I personally saw Danny Cook and a few other Cllr's shrug and shake their head when Chris Cooke asked if any othe Cllrs had read the Fluoride report he gave them.
Also a futher few residents and I were disgusted in Andrew Jame's Comment of the Signatures being out of tamworth and therefore not legitimate. At this point we wanted to stand up and tell him all the Signature's that Chris was not able to use had an * by them in order to identify that they can not be used.
We also wanted to point out that the Duckling petition also had signatures from people who were not tamwoth residents however I guess that in the time It took Andrew James to read an already typed up lettter of information from the "Health Professionals" attacking Chris it must of slipped his mind.
I must ask him, If he was told by a professional that if he "Drank a teaspoon of Radioactive waste every day (as long as its a teaspoon) then he would survive?" - Would he believe this too?
Lastly Again to Danny Cooke his comment about "There are bigger issues in Tamworth" I would Disagree I think there are issues in tamworth, and some serious however they should all be treated with all of the Cllr's determination and there are many residents who belive that most of the Cllr's are not pulling their weight!”

“More than 3,700 professionals (including 322 dentists) urge that fluoridation be stopped citing scientific evidence that ingesting fluoride is ineffective at reducing tooth decay and has serious health risks. See statement: http://tinyurl.com/537ocd
Eleven US EPA unions representing over 7000 environmental and public health professionals are calling for a moratorium on fluoridation. (b)
The CDC reports that 225 less communities adjusted for fluoride between 2006 and 2008. About 100 US and Canadian communities rejected fluoridation since 2008, including Fairbanks, Alaska, and Calgary, Alberta, Canada, this year.
NYC Councilman Peter Vallone, Jr introduced legislation to stop fluoridation in New York City .”
