Hockey team creates history by reaching last four of National Vase
Tamworth Men First XI 3
Old Bordenians 2
TAMWORTH reached the last four of the National Vase for the first time in their history as they defeated Old Bordenians in extra-time.
Tamworth started badly, falling behind but they responded well and levelled through Tom Sperrink, after his original shot had been saved.
Old Bordenians then retook the lead but Tamworth responded and Sperrink equalised again after Ben Acheson's shot was saved. Tamworth dominated the second half but failed to add to their goal tally as the Old Bordenians' defence stood strong.
The game went to extra-time and neither side could find a way through in the first period.
However, after the break Jez Holloway pulled the ball back for Simon Miles to stop and he flicked the ball into the top corner to send players and fans into raptures.
Town face South Cheshire in the last four on March 28.
Atherstone Adders Men First XI 0
Daventry 2
DESPITE the two sides being at opposite ends of the table, this proved a tight affair which could have gone either way.
The visitors opened the scoring just before half-time when a well-executed shot swerved past Steve Labram in the Atherstone goal.
Both sides worked hard after the break but Atherstone were hit by bad injuries to Ian Bennett and Justin Hadley, leaving them down to ten men and facing a real battle. Daventry took full advantage and claimed a second goal to secure victory.
Derwent 3
Tamworth Men Third XI 2
TAMWORTH lost out in this clash against fellow high-fliers Derwent.
They started slowly and were stopped from playing their normal passing game by a very robust Derwent.
Tamworth did eventually settle and took the lead as Kevin Guest pushed the ball past the keeper.
Derwent had a number of chances to get back into the game and did eventually, netting three times.
Tamworth started to take control after the break with Steve Allen running the show in midfield and they pulled one back through Guest but were unable to find the equaliser.
Banbury 2
Atherstone Fathoms 2
TOM Conlon was the two-goal hero as the Fathoms battled out a 2-2 draw with Banbury.
The game started at a steady pace with the Adders having most of the play but no goals to show for it.
They did eventually take the lead after Conlon set off on a solo run and rounded the goalkeeper before tapping in.
Banbury levelled the scoring at the start of the second half but Atherstone went back in front through Conlon.
However, it was Banbury who had the final word, netting a second to secure a draw.
