TAMWORTH snooker ace Dave Gilbert will not be embarking on an Oriental adventure next month after seeing his hopes of qualifying for the China Open disappear last week.

Gilbert was beaten 5-0 in his second qualifying game by former world champion Ken Doherty at Prestatyn in Wales.

The Irishman was in top form and did not allow Gilbert a look-in, making heavy breaks in each frame – efforts of 49, 41, 66, 75 and 69 taking him to victory.

Gilbert has cruised through 5-1 in his first round game against Patrick Wallace before meeting Doherty – who went on to lose to another ex-world champ, Graeme Dott, in the final qualifying round.

The Tamworth Snooker Centre potter will now turn his attentions to the World Championship qualifiers in Sheffield at the beginning of March, where he must win three games to earn a place at the Crucible.
