Let God transform you from the inside out
HENRY was a fragmented man. Pieces of him were everywhere. He got up each morning, looked in the mirror, and prepared himself for work.
From 7.30am until 4pm he gave a piece of his life to the factory where he worked, stood on the assembly line producing marketing concepts. From 5pm to 11pm he gave another piece to his television and latest high-tech mobile, sat on his settee consuming the unreality of 'soaps' and marketing concepts in the adverts produced by other people and texting 'nonsense' to all who would receive.
When the weekend came, Henry had fun. A small part of him recovered from his busy existence and, for a brief moment, glimpsed at life's other experiences – like 'fast food' and 'clubbing'… that lay beyond the day-to-day grind.
As he drove the routine trip to and from work, a thought began take root in his mind. Was life, in all its colourful wonder, passing him by? He had always worked hard to earn advancement and a solid wage, yet the pleasures his income provided left him empty and wanting more.
Because he could see no alternative to his trifling plight, Henry decided to try God. He pleaded with God to show him life as He intended it to be.
From where he stood, Henry could see only a small corridor leading to what he'd always considered as success. His view was badly blocked by debt, ambition, sin, guilt, and fear… everyday living. But God's vision for Henry's life was greater than all of Henry's ambitions. And when Henry put away his idea of what life should be, God showed him a threefold vision: a vision for his work, for himself, and for his relationship with God.
He was transformed by the vision of who God wanted him to be and soon realised that there was no monotony in a life surrendered to God. Every breath he breathed and everything he did was praise to his Father in heaven. His mind worshiped the Lord in thought. And his work, his pursuit of excellence, became a living prayer.
It is easy for us to write God off, and even those of us whom profess to be Christians fall into the rut of practiced prayers and mechanical church attendance – acts that have no sincere motivation. But the Bible warns against such dullness. "Where there is no vision, the people perish" (Proverbs 29:18 KJV).
If your life seems to have no purpose, or your Christian walk has become more obligatory than joyful, and your work is merely a means to an end, ask God to show His vision for your life and expect to be transformed.
In the first miracle performed by Jesus, turning the water into wine recorded in John's Gospel, we see our God is in the transforming business.
The world wants us to get a new hairdo or a new wardrobe. Society wants us to get a better job or learn a new skill. People want to lose weight or get a facelift.
But Jesus does not want to change your looks; he wants to change your heart.
And when that transformation takes place…it will show on the outside.
When the water was turned to wine, the shame of the bridal family was turned to joy. The mood of the party was transformed. Jesus' disciples were transformed. The Bible passage says, "He revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him."
The devil always gives best first and saves his worst till last. The pleasure of sin for a time … then it's the wages of sin – the consequence.
Jesus, well Jesus always saves the best for last. It gets sweeter and sweeter every day with Jesus.
One of these days we'll step on the shores of eternity into the presence of Jesus.
What a miracle!
