THE tranquillity of the National Memorial Arboretum will be shattered if a plan by supporters of high-speed rail is accepted, a local action group has warned.

Whittington and Lichfield District Stop HS2 Action Group (WLDStopHS2) say a proposal to link HS2 – the high-speed rail line from London to the Midlands – with the Midlands Main Line would mean many trains an hour running just metres from the UK's centre of remembrance.

The proposal – by pro-high-speed rail pressure group Greengauge 21 – would mean the construction of a new track from HS2 between Whittington and Lichfield, to join the Lichfield to Burton line at Wychnor Junction.

The arboretum is described as "spiritually uplifting. We believe this will be destroyed if trains are rumbling by," said the WLDStopHS2 spokesman.

“Nobody thinks about other peoples feelings ,no respect by those with power. The ordinary working people are just needed to fund the schemes that have not been thought out properly.Destruction of countryside that should be protected ,along with listed buildings where nobody can do anything to change them now are threatened with being bulldozed aside.”
