Lung-bursting run had echoes of Platty!

It was nice to get on the scoresheet for the second time this season against Northampton Town on Saturday.

Especially as a lot of the lads gave me a bit of stick after the game, saying the goal came in the 83rd minute and it was only the third time I'd been in the Cobblers' half all afternoon!

For those of you who didn't see it, it was a lung-bursting run through the centre of the pitch by myself and Michael Ricketts flicked the ball into my path.

From there I ran through like David Platt in his heyday, one-on-one with the keeper and tucked it beyond him!

I haven't set myself any goalscoring targets for the rest of the season but what we have talked about in the dressing room is spreading the goals around the team a bit more.

We can't keep relying on the strikers to score the goals for us, we all have to chip in.

Anyway, while it was great for me to get on the scoresheet, it was even more important for us to keep our mini run going.

It wasn't the best game to watch and it was a bit of a dogged encounter but we got the result we wanted plus the added bonus of a clean sheet too.

Rhys Weston has done really well at centre back recently but his injury has given Manny Smith the chance to show what he can do and he played ever so well – he was arguably our best player.

Next we host Yeovil Town on Saturday and then visit Scunthorpe United on Tuesday before travelling to Southend United next weekend.

Yeovil lost on Tuesday night so they will want to bounce back but we will certainly take a lot of confidence in that game and the others next week.

Away from the pitch, the players this week had the chance to visit a day hospice in Walsall, which is always a great thing to be involved with.

As a footballer you sometimes live in a little bubble and trips like that really open your eyes and make you realise how lucky and privileged you are to do what you do.

And if we can cheer people up just a little bit with these kind of visits it is always worthwhile.
