AN OUTBREAK of meningitis has hit pupils at Coleshill School.

One case of meningococcal meningitis has been confirmed while two more children are feared to have contracted the disease.

In a joint statement with the Health Protection Agency (HPA), Warwickshire County Council has sought to reassure parents and staff saying 'that no special precautions are necessary and the school can carry on as normal.'

Reports suggest the children concerned are Year 7 pupils, aged 11 and 12, and that they had recently returned from a trip to Germany.

They are all currently receiving treatment in hospital.

Having confirmed the outbreak, the HPA are now working with the school to trace close contacts of the affected pupils to ensure that they receive antibiotics.

"In addition the school is sending out letters to all parents of children at the school with information on meningitis," a spokesperson for the HPA confirmed.

In the meantime, life at the school in Coventry Road is continuing as normal.
