A £1.3MILLION scheme to relieve one of Tamworth's busiest road networks has been a hailed a "major success".

Traffic lights have been installed at Ventura Park's heavily-congested main islands.

The works, which began in April, were completed last Thursday, with lights at the Jolly Sailor and Lady Bridge islands switched on and traffic flow re-routed.

Following their activation, county Councillor Mike Maryon, Cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "The upgrade of Ventura Park's road infrastructure has been a major success.

"The team has done a first-class job in delivering the improvements quickly and efficiently.

"This substantial investment into Tamworth will reap many benefits, easing congestion and making the town more attractive to people.

"I'd like to thank residents, motorists and visitors for their patience while this economy boosting scheme has been taking place."

Tamworth Borough Council Cabinet member Steve Claymore, head of economic development, agreed: "The work at Ventura has gone exceptionally well."

Work on the traffic lights was agreed as part of a £1.3million improvement package, promised as a result of the new Cardinal Point and John Lewis developments.

The scheme was coordinated by Staffordshire County Council with the help of Tamworth Borough Council to minimise disruption for shoppers, businesses and motorists.

In addition to traffic lights, kerbs were realigned and new sections of footpath and roads were constructed on the approach to the islands and on the islands themselves. Road markings have been put in place, new signs installed and utilities including electricity, phone lines and water cables diverted.

The majority of the work was carried out overnight to reduce disruption, with parts of the carriageway closed.

If the works prove successful in the long-term they could pave the way for further improvements.

Other ideas under discussion include a second exit at the Jolly Sailor Retail Park, near Argos, subject to the landowner's consent, and redesigning traffic flow on River Drive.

If approved, a right turn will be created at the road's junction with Fazeley Road. Currently traffic joining River Drive from Fazeley Road can only turn left, bringing motorists back up to the Ladybridge Island, adding to congestion at Ventura.

“all comments and complaints about the new road layout at Ventura Park should be sent to Lord Prescott, c/o the House of Lords, Parliament, London. It was his department that produced the plans for the new road but keep blaming the local council”

“Anyone of the opinion that this Cllr Maryon, is out of his depth as Cabinet for highways and transport?. Or, for that matter, that most of them need some sort of education.
Let's face it, we surely have arrived at a most ridiculous stage in political proceedings, when a joe blogg councillor is given titles reminiscent of third world dictators with medal ribbons from chest to waist, but being totally meaningless?
Can we ever think in terms of ordinary Joe Bloggs ( very often the salt of the earth) volunteering to give their time up for out of pocket expenses to actually attempt to represent ttheir locality; instead of careerists in a worthless occupation of local politics.”

“Accident upon accident waiting to happen, not due to bad driving but as a result of illogical road marking and layout. As a class 1 Institute of advanced motorist driver for 15 years & driver for over 20 I can not recall such a clearly laid out accident black spot! Who on earth would 'design' an accident black spot anyway?
Last weekend I followed the new lane markings for my intended route then found myself immediately in the wrong lane on the roundabout and doing an emergency stop along with others for traffic stopping at traffic lights for the three exits after the one I wanted when I should and would of been exiting the roundabout in the left hand lane had I done the logical thing & not have been directed into the middle lane & almost an accident.
Ventura retail park is a place to be avoided more so than ever due to the added fear of an accident and damage to motor vehicles and even people!
I only hope things are redesigned sensibly before that happens.”

“How can anyone hail the new traffic light system at the Jolly Sailor islandas a success is beyond me? It's a total nightmare. You only have to stand nearby for a few minute during the day to see how confused some drivers are as there are too many lanes that seem to guide you where you do not want to go. It's against all logic and how drivers are taught to navigate traffic islands. You can also hear the bibbing of horns consistently as frustrated driver get cut-up where 2 lanes suddenly become 1 (and this is true of other road systems in Tamworth) but 2 into 1 does not fit.... Too many lanes give drivers too many choices and there is an element on the road that will use this to their own advantage without any regard for other road users, just to get 2 cars infront and save a few of seconds on their journey.

It almost like the person who designed the layout used a 'spirograph' to make a geometrically perfect pattern of lines around the island. It probably looks very nice from a helicoptor but when you are at road level it makes no sense at all.... The whole thing need to be put back to what it was and more exits out of the retails park need to be provided which is the real issue..”

“It would be useful if drivers remembered that the lights existed at all. Three days ago I watched four vehicles stuck while trying to navigate the island by Asda/Sainsbury's and it was obvious that all of them were not looking at the traffic lights.

Yesterday a black 4x4 driver stopped at the lights even though they were on green. The driver was also watching the flow of traffic and not the lights.

It will not be long before there is a major accident here.

Furthermore the lane markings are wrong (as stated by other people). It was quicker and flowed better before the lights were installed.”

“One final comment from me. If traffic from the Fazeley road is re-routed by being allowed to trun right, obviously, traffic exiting from the Ventura roundabout toward the Snowdome, will have to give way, causing tailbacks in that area???”

“The flow of traffic around the island is much worse since the change. What's the point of writing Ventura Park on the lanes when both the Argos exit and Asda are classed as Ventura Park. Very confusing. The Exit from the island to Asda only takes a couple of vehicles at the nearby traffic light to be completely blocked off. Already drivers from the A5 are avoiding the inside lane to reach Asda and opting to drive around the outside of the constant jams.

It's a nightmare and it'll only be a matter of time before there is an accident or worse. XMas shopping will see also traffic backing up the A5.”
