Reginald Dwight, aka Elton John, aka impersonator Nigel John is performing a special concert at St Editha's Church. SI
In fact, he's not getting his fee, but in order to raise the maximum amount of cash for the event from the minimum outlay he is only accepting minimum expenses.
Tamworth arts promoter and church member Ian Gibbons is organising the event after realising more could be done for the roof appeal.
He said: "A few weeks ago, I set about the task of organising a special concert. I spoke to Reverend Barrett about the idea and with a wry smile he said 'Ian, what are you waiting for? I thought you'd never get round to it'.
"I decided to call in a few favours. I am happy to report that Nigel John has agreed to come to us for minimum expenses.
"I had to pinch myself, I know how much this show costs commercially."
It is hoped that, if St Editha's is filled to capacity, almost £4,000 will be raised for the roof appeal.
All of the Elton classics will there including Rocket Man, Circle of Life, Your Song and Crocodile Rock – and the acoustics of a church are bound to make this a great show.
Tickets for this special night on Thursday, October 30, are now available from Tamworth Tourist Information Centre in Market Street or from St Editha's bookshop, priced £10.
