TAMWORTH'S two Catholic priests will be swapping their cassocks for aprons this Christmas when they cook up a treat for the lonely.

Father Michael White and Father Noel N'Tungu will be spreading the real message of the festive season by inviting anyone who will be isolated or lonely to join them for roast turkey with all the trimmings on Christmas Day.

Building work updating the Sacred Heart Centre is nearing completion and the new catering kitchen will give the priests plenty of room to cook for between 35 and 40 guests at the Glascote premises.

Fr Michael said: "We are looking forward to it. We have a team of people who have offered to help us prepare the vegetables and both Noel and I like cooking.

"We can cater for around 35 to 40 people and the dinner is for anyone who needs it – individuals or even families, people of any faith or none.

"We will be cooking and waiting on table. We will also have musicians to play Christmas songs and maybe we'll have some games if there are any children attending."

On the menu will be soup, roast turkey and all the trimmings, followed by Christmas pudding.

Bookers have donated two turkey crowns for the meal and the priests are hopeful other stores might step in to provide crackers, Christmas puddings and perhaps a Christmas tree.

Fr Noel will celebrate his 51st birthday on Christmas Day. He said: "I shall be sharing both my birthday and Christmas Day with lots of people, it will be a time to eat, drink and be merry!"

Anyone who would like a place at the Christmas lunch, or knows of anyone who will be alone at Christmas and might like to go along should contact the Parish Team on 01827 62161 or, if preferred, speak to Fr Michael privately, on 07757 641787.

The priests are also hoping to deliver a limited number of meals to people who are housebound and alone.
