ANOTHER major retailer is heading to Tamworth, the Herald can reveal this week.

Fashion giant River Island will be taking up a vacant unit on Ventura Park, adjacent to Next.

The site was formerly home to Carpet Right, which the Herald understands is moving to one of the empty units at the £6 million Cardinal Point, currently home to Maplin, B&Q and Next Home, which opened last month.

River Island joins clothing retailers New Look and Outfit on Ventura.

Workers were spotted on site this week re-fitting the unit and replacing the exciting windows and doors.

The move was confirmed by Tamworth Borough Council this week.

The store is the latest high street brand to come to Tamworth's out-of-town retail park – with four big names coming to the area in just six months.

An application to bring three food and drink outlets to the town – one of which has been confirmed to be Nando's, with another rumoured to be Starbucks – is due to be considered by borough councillors on the planing committee in the coming weeks.

The proposals call for three restaurants on the site of the former Allied Carpets on Ventura Park, adjacent to Sainsbury's.

A spokesman for international restaurant chain Nando's said: "We can confirm that we're looking at Tamworth for a new Nando's site."

He did add: "However, at this point we haven't decided where in the town we'll be looking."

River Island was unable to provide the Herald with a comment at the time of going to press.
