I WOULD like to encourage readers who have a place in this year's Great North Run to back Age UK by raising funds for people in later life.

I support Age UK, the new force combining Age Concern and Help the Aged, because growing older is an issue that affects everyone in our society. I believe it is something to be celebrated, but all too often the voices of people in later life go unheard.

By running the Great North Run for Age UK, you will be directly helping to provide services and support across the country, including local lunch clubs, befriending services and the charity's information and advice line.

Runners will receive expert fundraising and training tips, a personalised running vest and a post-race goody bag – as well as an Age UK cheering point along the route spurring runners on.

During my career I have been able to see the positive impact a fit and active lifestyle can have – and going the extra mile for a worthy cause is even more rewarding. So what are you waiting for? Visit www.ageuk.org.uk/events for more information or call 0207 239 1922.

Hannah Waterman, via email.
