Scrap excuses for plain theft
I WOULD like to add to your readers comments in last week's Herald regarding rag-and-bone or scrap men.
I too have had items stolen and so have friends and neighbours – including a barbecue, a fire pit, a child's bike and an iron bin.
I also caught them helping themselves to my lawn mower, which I had left outside my house while I went in to get the grass box.
The only explanation I got was: "Sorry love, I thought it was scrap."
If it was scrap, I would inform you of this and not expect you to help yourself – it's not as though we are not aware of your very loud and regular presence.
I also believe this to be stealing – there is too much of it and something should be done about it.

“I have had similar instances of scrap iron chaps trying to make off with garden implements actually in use, but perhaps temporarily unattended. And how is it that they can use that infernal recorded trumpet every ten seconds or so for every day of the week, I thought that there was a law restricting the amount of times within one hour that they were allowed. They do appear to be a law unto themselves.”
