Shock report reveals hospital has highest death rate in country

HEALTH chiefs at the George Eliot Hospital are seeking to reassure patients after it was shown to have the highest death rate in the country.

An external review into mortality rates at the Nuneaton-based hospital has been announced after the Department of Health revealed the statistics.

In a replacement to the Dr Foster reports, the new system sees trusts up and down the country rated in terms of the number of patients who die following treatment compared to the number who would be expected to die.

The George Eliot has the highest value above what is expected in terms of deaths, with 1,024 patients dying in the year ending March 2011 – as compared to a predicted figure of 843.

Chief executive Kevin McGee said: "We are committed to being totally transparent about this issue and we expect the review to provide a reliable conclusion as to what we need to change to ensure our rating improves in line with other hospitals".

The review will explore key areas of concern and whether any factors outside the Trust's control are contributory.
