A LIVELY debate was held as the annual "State of Tamworth" full council meeting was held this week.

Each portfolio holder was given five minutes to summarise their year before the floor was opened to questions from fellow councillors on Tuesday night at Marmion House.

Deputy leader Councillor Rob Pritchard, pictured right, said: "It has been a great year for Tamworth with events like the Staffordshire Hoard and the Music Festival attracting thousands of people into the town and to see what it has to offer."

Mr Pritchard, portfolio holder for Corporate Governance, also hailed the move of the Tamworth Information Centre from Market Street to the Phillip Dix Centre as a success and that its "business was booming".

He added: "There has been no cuts to frontline services, in fact, some of them are expanding."

A major outdoor event was also announced for next summer to take place in the Castle Grounds to embrace the 2012 Olympics.

Cabinet member for economic development and enterprise Cllr Steve Claymore highlighted how developments such as John Lewis and B&Q had brought thousands of pounds and hundreds of jobs into the area.

But also maintained that he was committed to the development of the town centre.

Independent Cllr Chris Cooke said Tamworth town centre had "become a ghost town" and attributed one of the main reasons to there being parking charges in the town centre, but not at Ventura Park.

Leader of the Council Danny Cook responded: "For once I am going to agree with you, Cllr Cooke – I believe that parking in the town centre should be free.

"However, we can't just turn this off like a tap – car parking provides a vital revenue stream which funds frontline services."

One of the most impassioned speakers was Labour councillor Richard McDermid, who attacked the council's lack of action in his Belgrave ward.

He said: "You haven't done the action plan – you put it in the Herald saying what you were going to do but it isn't done.

It is about time they (Conservatives) got their act together."

Cllr Rob Prtichard, who also represents the Belgrave ward, replied: "I leave Belgrave PACT (Partners and Communities Together) meetings with a bigger smile than when I arrived.

"Underpasses are being cleaned, kids are paining murals, hedges are being trimmed for the first time in a decade, bulbs are being planted and trees raised. I know we haven't done everything, we never will, but we will do our best."

“The figures are meaningless unless we know how many stood for election, and for what Parties, and how many Independents.”

“Since 1983 the Conservative and Labour party's have won etc etc.
And the point is? Only small groups have the wherewithal to challenge them.
The same result happens nationwide. Ergo, because there are only two party's to choose from, one or the other should win.................however something went amiss at the last general election, there was only cons and labs and neither won..............what happened?”

“Weskiwi, I sometimes wonder whether some of our politicians live on the same planet as us. I only have to go up the pub and speak to some of the people who live on the area I formerly policed, people who I know well, and who from time to time still come to me for advice concerning problems with petty bureaucracy and difficulties they are going through. I can tell you they are far from happy with the way things are going. No one has ever said to me the politicians are doing a good job, and as you say it appears that the only people who are actually keen to vote are the people who back a particular party every time regardless.
I do try to help if I can, so I think I am as well trying to do it from where I am rather than getting involved with politics myself, which would only involve me in their petty squabbling, although it sometimes tempts me. I know many people in my own area and I am sure I could get some of them to vote for me. If I ever did go for it I would not wish to be associated with any of the current Party's. It would have to be The Independent Common Sense Party. I believe many people are sick of party politics.”

“Cllr James. I do sincerely hope that you are recommending OscarOneThree to stand as an independant, as the town's people need a drastic change from the same old, same old. Of course the temptation would be that the cost of funding his canditature would be met by the party ( whichever), for which he would need to follow party line; whereas, standing as an independant, would mean a dib into his own pocket.
I do hope that the comment * the residents ( or electorate) must be happy with the two political parties, was tongue in cheek? the electorate barely turn out to vote at all, and not because of apathy. For all the talk of differences between the two, the man in the street can only see chalk and chalk and a total absence of cheese.”

“Councillor James, that is not beyond the bounds of possibility. I would have the advantage of having the time to devote entirely to my constituents, unlike some of the Councillor's at present. The only thing that stops me is the fact that I am getting on a bit in age, and my health is not too good. However it is still not beyond the bounds of possibility. Several of my ex colleagues have been elected Councillor's including a one time Mayor of Stafford, and a one time Mayor of Bridgenorth.
I would of course stand for the area in which I live, which happens to be your constituency, and I do have the advantage of knowing almost everyone in the area that I used to police.”

“Why don't you put your name on a ballot paper and the residents of Tamworth decide.

By the way, since I first voted in 1983, only 4 independents have been elected onto Tamworth Borough Council, so the residents of Tamworth must be happy with the two political parties”
