STAFFORD 1 TAMWORTH MEN FIRST XI 4

TAMWORTH enjoyed a six-point haul last weekend to take them top of West Midlands Division One.

Their memorable weekend began with an excellent win over Stafford.

Tamworth started the game at a great tempo as they produced early chances which were well saved by the home keeper.

When the deadlock was broken, it was the result of an incisive run down the left by Brisco.

His pass across goal found Martin who provided a simple finish.

Further pressure brought a second with Sperrink converting a short corner with a straight strike beyond the keeper and the defender on the line.

In the second half, Stafford threw caution to the wind pushing more bodies forward.

Goode and Langford, in defence, had to absorb a period of pressure before Tamworth extended the lead when Sperrink rounded the keeper and saw his effort turned into the empty net by an opposing defender.

Tamworth added a fourth when Wagstaff fired home with a slick drag flick to the top left-hand corner.

Stafford pulled a goal back late on but Tamworth were always in control.

TAMWORTH MEN FIRST XI 2 OLD WULFS 1

TAMWORTH secured three points at home to Old Wulfrunians on Sunday as they produced a spirited fightback from a goal down.

They made a lacklustre start with Old Wulfs were camped in the Tamworth half.

The visitors deservedly took the lead before the break.

At the other end, Popple saw a reverse stick strike fly just wide but Tamworth went into the break a goal down.

Tamworth looked much brighter in the second half and a tireless display from Wagstaff, Herring and Haywood in midfield gave them much more possession.

The home side scored twice in five minutes to edge in front.

First, Martin played a perfectly weighted pass into Sperrink on the left and he drilled his shot past the onrushing keeper.

Then Goode released Brisco moments later and he coolly flicked beyond the keeper from the right-hand side of the D.

Brisco continued to be a menace and Hancox was unlucky not to extend the lead when his run and shot was scrambled off the line but Tamworth held on to secure a three-point lead at the top of the league.
