Town's outdoor gym moving a step closer
BUILDING work has begun on Tamworth's new outdoor gym.
Fitness fans will be able to use the equipment, which is being installed in the Castle Pleasure Grounds, for free.
Work on the £19,000 gym is expected to last around three weeks and will include six machines specially designed for use in all weathers.
"The outdoor gym is the latest in the council's drive to help people improve their fitness and get healthy," explained Councillor Steve Claymore, cabinet member for parks and play.
"It is completely free to use, there are no joining fees, and anyone can come and use it whenever they want to."
The gym, which will be sited next to the bowling green, has been funded thanks to a successful bid for cash from the Local Strategic Partnership by Tamworth Borough Council.
Once open, no booking will be required and the equipment will be available to anyone aged 12 and over. People new to exercise are encouraged to consult their doctor.
If the pilot is a success, the borough council will be looking to install other outdoor gyms in communities around the borough.
Equipment to be installed at the outdoor gym includes a double station lat pull down, a double station chest press, a double station leg press, a fitness bike and two cross-trainers.
The equipment will be secured into a concrete base to prevent thefts.
