This is Tamworth

I ENJOY reading John Harpers pages and looking at photographs of old Tamworth.

As I was looking at them last Thursday, August 19 they set me thinking about the characters we had in Tamworth.

Most Tamworth people my age will remember them.

Jack Passey, facing the Grand cinema every Saturday night threatening to go 10 rounds with the statue on the roof and the police had to take him home he was that drunk.

Frank Williscroft and Ghandi Wilson, at Tamworth Football Club calling the players nasty words.

Then we had Albert Dean every Sunday dinner singing "Nellie Dean". And Jack Piekerins was the barber. We used to go in every Saturday for a haircut.

His wife would bring him a bacon sandwich. He would go 'snip snip' then take a bite of his sandwich.

And I almost forgot Kitty Hale, the paper woman.

Jack Passey and old Tipper Hannah were relations of mine, none of them would harm the hair of a child's head.

We will never see their likes again.

Councillor Chippy Lees.
