Blues review: Kent Duchaine at Lichfield Guildhall

Monday, October 13, 2008, 11:00

BLUES fans enjoyed a master-class when American guitarist and singer Kent Duchaine played at Lichfield Guildhall.

His two hour set consisted of songs from the Delta Blues songbook, as well as some light jazz classics, and his own tales of his long and storied careers.

Not surprisingly, the blues legend Robert Johnson featured strongly, with good performances of some of his best known songs, such as Come On In My Kitchen, Cross-Roads, Sweet Home Chicago, and Last Fair Deal Gone Down.

As well as cover versions, DuChaine played a number of his own songs, which included Friend of Mine and 16 Gauge Steel, which was a ballad written about his friend and mentor Johnny Shines.

Kent's reading of Leadbelly's classic song Rock Island Line took it away from the skiffle that is more familiar because of Lonnie Donnegan. A playful version of Willie Dixon's Seventh Son featured alongside Peggy Lee's Fever and Gershwin's

Summertime, which gave a harder edge to the usually more sophisticated song.

Duchaine was on good form throughout the gig, playing often quite complicated guitar parts behind his vocals, on his Dobro guitar.

Alan Rhody's ballad I'll Be True To You served as the evening's encore.
