What happens to gift cards?

Tamworth Herald

I FEEL I had to write regarding the recent news about Peacocks going into administration.

I went into the shop in Tamworth town centre last week to spend my gift cards that I had received for Christmas, only to be told by the assistant that they are no longer accepting gift cards, as the company has gone into administration.

She then told me to fill in a form and send it to the administrators.

I did this straight away, but I haven't received a reply yet, and still wasn't told if I would definitely get the money back for the gift cards.

I wasn't too pleased as I had saved these gift cards until now because I was waiting for all the new stock to come in.

Can someone enlighten me as to whether the company can do this, as the gift cards have been paid for so the company has already received the money?

It's not like I would have been getting the items for free!

“I have just received a letter from the administrators telling me that I can hope to receive .07p per £ for my voucher.
How much did it cost for them to send that letter?
And how much for the free hardback copy of their proposals?

This is adding insult to injury!!”

“Yes the negative sides of gift cards is your at the mercy of the company the gift card is for. Borders is a good example, they went under and then were able to mark all unused gift cards as earned income, making all gift cards useless.

“I find it disgraceful that customers are not the first consideration to Administrators.
Money was given upfront by those intending to give gifts for Christmas to their friends and family. - well prior to Peacocks going into to administration.
I think there is a moral right that these people should not be let down even if it is not a legal right.
How is it fair to use such money to buy in new stock under the circumstances? It amounts to using ill-gotten gains.
Those in charge must have suspected this was to happen shortly after Christmas yet millions of gift cards were sold.
This is exploitation of the most important people to Peacocks - their regular customers!
Also the staff who worked very hard before Christmas.

I too have sent in a claim form but was told to expect only a 'nominal sum' in return and nowhere near the full amount! Have not heard anything yet.
