Surely there's a solution to 10pm PCSO time limit?

Thursday, November 20, 2008, 12:00

INITIALLY I was against the idea of PCSOs. I took the view, if we need police officers, employ them. Don't try to police on the cheap.

However, from experience I have revised this view.

I know the PCSOs are committed to stamping out antisocial behaviour and do some sterling work in this area.

It is a pity that contractually they cannot work after 10pm, but this shouldn't stop us recruiting more of a similar calibre.

I don't know the reason this time limitation is placed on them, but surely it is not an insurmountable problem?

If there are genuine reasons for this limitation, let's hear them. If not, let's change them.

After all, if they are called to a disturbance at 9:45pm, do they leave regardless of the situation at 10pm? And even then, are they not still on duty until they return to the police station and sign off? So there must already be conditions allowing them to continue to work after 10pm.

It would free police officers to concentrate on serious crime while the PCSOs deal with the yobs. And if it costs £3m, then in my opinion we have to pay it.
