Families trapped up Blackpool Tower

Thursday, October 09, 2008, 15:45

EXCLUSIVE: Nine Tamworth people, including young children, were trapped at the top of Blackpool Tower for FOUR hours in gale-force winds.

The Insull and Cole families were stranded 500ft in the air while gusts of 50mph buffeted the famous structure.

The group were forced to resort to using a bucket in a broom cupboard as a makeshift toilet during their ordeal.

Roy and Karen Cole and their children Patrick (4) and Oliver (2) and Richard and Susan Insull and children Megan (12), Ben (8) and Jacob (5) were offered drinks and snacks from a vending machine and had to just wait for the storm to subside.

It is the first time in the Tower's 114-year history that the lifts were closed because of the poor weather conditions.

The drama began at around 2pm on Saturday afternoon.
