Wright's flight fright

Friday, November 21, 2008, 10:00

TAMWORTH striker Nick Wright could have been forgiven for being more than a little anxious when he boarded the plane for Tamworth's 'bonding' trip to Northern Ireland on Monday.

Just four days earlier, Wright was part of the England C squad whose return flight from an international in Italy hit unexpected troubles.

The BA Boeing 737 that Wright and his new England team-mates were on was forced to make an emergency landing at Gatwick on the trip back from Naples.

The pilot was forced the aborted the landing and climb away from the airport because there was a problem with the plane's nose landing gear

The aircraft was forced to circle for 25 minutes before it finally made its approach and landed safely.

Such is Wright's laid back nature, however, that he wasn't nervous when he flew out to Ireland with the rest of the squad this week.

"It wasn't as bad as it has been made out in some quarters," Wright told Herald Sport.

"There was a problem but it was nothing major – at least I don't think it was – I was half asleep though.

"There were a few players panicking at the time but we were reassured by the pilot and eventually landed.

"It didn't make me nervous about flying at all on Monday to be honest.

"But I don't think some of the lads – especially the nervous flyers like Jake Sheridan – appreciated me talking about it this week!"

Wright was thrilled to make his England C debut after coming off the bench for the final 17 minutes of the side's 2-2 draw with Italy.

The draw was enough to clinch England's non-league squad a place in the International Challenge Trophy final.

"Just to be able to wear the England shirt was a really proud moment for me," said Wright.

"Fair enough, I didn't get too long on the pitch and had to be disciplined enough to spend a lot of it defending.

"But just the whole experience of travelling to Italy, mixing with another set of lads and representing my country was special.

"Hopefully I will get the chance to do it again. I didn't get masses of feedback from the coaching staff but they just told me to keep knuckling down, working hard and scoring goals and I'll remain in the picture."

Wright has now put international thoughts to one side as Tamworth prepare for Saturday's FA Trophy clash at home to Workington.

"The FA Trophy is a competition I'd love to do well in," Wright added.

"I was chatting to some of the England C squad and a lot of them have played in the final before. Playing at Wembley would be an absolute dream.

"Hopefully we'll get through against Workington this weekend.

"From my point of view, I need to start scoring again now.

"I've hit a bit of a dry patch. I'm trying not to count the number of games without a goal but I think it's five!

"I'm just not that happy with my form at the moment. I was chatting to Des Lyttle about it the other day and he just said he thinks I am trying too hard and thinking too much about it.

"I just need to relax a bit and once a goal comes I'm sure they will start flowing again.

"Fortunately Shelds (Gareth Sheldon) is bagging them at the moment which is great for the side, although it means I am playing catch up!"
