Eight tries seal victory for Eds
ASTON Old Edwardians returned to winning ways with a 47-25, eight-try romp against Shrewsbury in Midlands Two West North.
From the kick-off, they secured an attacking scrum and moved the ball blind.
Veteran winger Darren Gardener then crashed over for a try within 60 seconds.
The conversion was missed.
But Blake Bennett made amends just two minutes later with a 25-metre penalty to put Aston 8-0 ahead.
They stretched their lead when skipper Chris Goldsmith breached the first line of defence and fed full-back Rob Chesner.
He made a 40-metre break before attracting the attention of the final two Shrewsbury defenders.
Chesner popped the ball to Gareth Jones, who ran in under the posts.
This was followed by a catch and drive from a five-yard line.
After series of quick rucks, second-row Paul Finnemore forced his way over to take the score to 20-0.
Shrewsbury responded with a try.
But, from the restart, Finnemore gathered the kick and set up a ruck, which released quick ball to the backs.
The ball reached Jones, who beat three covering defenders to score his second try.
Then the final score of the first half came with a Shrewsbury penalty from 35 metres to make the score 25-10.
The Shrews continued their comeback and closed the gap.
But then Aston's Chris Cheney scored in the corner, which capped a slick performance from the scrum-half.
Paul Horrocks, who replaced Michael Tate, later forced his way over from a five-yard line-out and Bennett added the conversion.
From the kick-off, a 50-metre break by back-row Marcus Harewood set up a series of close drives.
The ball came loose and replacement winger Lea Ross pounced for the try.
Chris Balmforth galloped across the line from 40 metres out to complete the scoring.
